Tennessee Parenting Class FAQs

Who is required to take this 4-hour class in Tennessee?

Under T.C.A. § 36-6-408, any parents of minor children who are filing for divorce, annulment, or separate maintenance in Tennessee are legally mandated to attend a parent educational seminar. Your final divorce decree cannot be granted until both parents comply.

Why does the course have to be 4 hours long?

Tennessee state law explicitly states that the required educational seminar must be a minimum of four (4) hours in duration. If you take a course that is shorter than 4 hours, your local judge or court clerk will likely reject your certificate.

Is this required for the Permanent Parenting Plan?

Yes. In Tennessee, a judge must review and approve a Permanent Parenting Plan that outlines residential schedules and decision-making responsibilities. The court will not approve this plan or finalize the divorce until the certificates of completion for this seminar are filed.

Do my ex-spouse and I have to take the class together?

No, and it is highly discouraged. Each parent must register for, pay for, and complete the 4-hour seminar individually. You do not need to use the same provider or complete the course at the same time.

Will the court accept a digital PDF certificate?

Yes. Tennessee Circuit and Chancery Courts fully accept the digital PDF certificates generated by our platform. You can print it to physically hand to the clerk, or provide it to your attorney for electronic filing.
