Illinois Parenting Class FAQs

Who exactly needs to take this course in Illinois?

Under Illinois law, completing an approved parent education program is mandatory for all parents with minor children involved in a dissolution of marriage (divorce). It is also required for unmarried parents who are asking the court for an initial ruling on the allocation of parental responsibilities or parenting time.

What is the deadline to complete the class?

Most Illinois counties require parents to complete the class within 60 days after the initial case management conference. If you fail to complete the course, the judge can impose sanctions against you, and they will likely refuse to finalize your divorce or parenting plan.

Do my ex-spouse and I have to take the class together?

No. In fact, Illinois courts heavily discourage this. Each parent must register for and complete the course individually. You do not need to use the same provider, and you certainly do not need to take it at the same time.

Is this accepted as an alternative to “Focus on Children” or “Children First”?

Yes. Programs like “Focus on Children” (Cook County) or “Children First” (Madison/Tazewell Counties) are just local brand names for the Rule 924 mandate. As long as you submit an official 4-hour completion certificate from an approved, clinically-backed program like Cadenza, your requirement is fulfilled.

Will the court accept a digital/printed PDF certificate?

Yes. Illinois circuit courts fully accept digital PDF certificates generated by our platform. You can easily upload your downloaded certificate directly into the Illinois e-File portal or present it to your attorney to submit on your behalf.
