Minnesota Marriage License FAQs

Is there a waiting period to get married in Minnesota?

No. Minnesota eliminated its 5-day waiting period in 2016. You can apply for your marriage license and get married on the exact same day. However, your marriage license is only valid for 6 months after it is issued.

How long does the premarital course take?

Minnesota law strictly requires a minimum of 12 hours of premarital education. Our online course is entirely self-paced, meaning you can log in and out over several days, but you must accumulate 12 hours of coursework before your official Educator's Statement is generated.

Why is my Educator's Statement mailed instead of emailed?

Minnesota statute requires that you present an original, physically signed and notarized statement on official letterhead to claim your $75 discount. County registrars will reject printed PDFs. To protect you from being turned away, Kristen Franzen personally signs, notarizes, and mails your original statement via USPS.

Where do we go to get our marriage license?

In Minnesota, marriage licenses are generally issued by the local county registrar or licensing center (such as the Hennepin County Government Center). Both you and your partner must apply, bringing valid photo IDs, social security numbers, and your original, notarized Educator's Statement.

Are all four course variations accepted by the state?

Yes! Whether you choose the Standard, Faith-Friendly, Inclusive, or Spanish track, your 12-hour curriculum is fully compliant with MN Statute 517.08 (including the required premarital inventory and communication skills training) and guarantees your $75 fee discount.
